CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION


1.1 Background of The problem

Language is a system of communication consisting of sounds, words, and grammar or the system of communication used by the people of the particular country of the profession (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary). Language is an important part of human life. People use language in any field in their daily activity. But every country has a different language, so if they want to make a communication with a different country they should use that same language, that language is called international language.

Everybody knows that English is an international language and has been very popular as an important language. Now we can see that English cannot be separated from human life around the world. English is used almost in all aspect of our daily activities such as technology, trades, economics, politics, and language and literature of culture.

In Indonesia, English has been taught as the first foreign language that should be learned and understood, because almost all of science and technology are written in English. The Indonesian government decides English as the first foreign language, which must be taught from junior high school up to university even English is started to be taught for elementary students as the local content.

In achieving the goal of curriculum there are many problems faced by teacher and students, it means that so far the goal of the curriculum has not been achieved yet. It can be seen that many students who have finished from senior high school could not use English for communication both in spoken and written well.

Vocabulary is an essential aspect for everyone who wants to learn a language, although someone is good grammar. For example, he can not ignore the existence of vocabulary. When he or she speaks English, it means he or she expresses an idea of using a number of English words that are arranged appropriately in an acceptable way. When he or she read a book written in English, moreover, he or she actually read a number of English words are composed systematically using accepted English grammar.

That is why Robert Lado states that one can not deny or ignore the existence of words (vocabulary) as a tangible unit of language. By mastering vocabulary, the more vocabulary they master, the more comprehension they have. (Robert Lado, 1957: 75)

Based on the statements above, it can be summarized that to help students in understanding English vocabulary we can use teaching media or kind of games. A kind of game, a picture, and a multimedia system are the unit of media which have been proved in increasing English vocabulary. The problem is why the facilities (media) especially a kind of game had not been used well in teaching learning process, especially in learning vocabulary as the most important thing in learning a language.

But in our view, the students just memorize the vocabulary without imagining in their mind about the things what they have learned because the teacher only gives the words of vocabulary without using the picture itself. It seems like happen by the students of SMP Budi Mulia Kedaton, Bandar Lampung. They are still difficult to learn vocabulary, it caused by the teacher who taught without various techniques and without media self.  So in this research, the writer tries to prove that by using an easy crossword, it can increase the students’ vocabulary. The crossword puzzle is a puzzle in which words corresponding to numbered clues are to be found and corresponding to numbered clues are written into squares in the puzzle. Crossword is a word puzzle that normally takes the form of a square or rectangular grid of black and white squares. The goal is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words or phrases, by solving clues which lead to the answers.

Based on the background of the problem the writer proposed a research entitles The Implementation of An Easy Crossword toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at the Second Semester of Seventh Class at SMP Budi Mulia Kedaton, Bandar Lampung in 2009/2010.


1.2 The Identification of Problem

Based on the background of the problem above, the writer formulated the problem as follows:

1. The students are difficult in learning English.
2. The students do not interest in learning English, especially in vocabulary.
3. The students find difficulties to remember vocabulary.
4. The teachers do not use the various technique in teaching and learning process.
5. The teachers do not find a suitable media to can help the students in solving their problem.

1.3 The Limitation of Problem

Based on the background and identification of the problem above, the writer limited the research problem. The limitation of research focused on The Implementation of An Easy Crossword toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery.

1.4 The Formulation of The Problem

Based on the limitation of the problems above, the writer formulated the problems as follows:

1. How was the students’ vocabulary mastery?
2. How was the influence of Easy Crossword toward students’ vocabulary mastery?

1.5 The Objectives and Uses Of The Research

1.5.1. The Objectives of the Research

1.   To know and describe the average score of the students’ vocabulary mastery.
2.  To know and describe the influence of using An Easy Crossword towards students’ vocabulary mastery.

1.5.2. The Uses of the Research

1.  To inspire other researchers to do research concerning similar themes.
2.  To motivate the students in learning English especially vocabulary mastery.
3. To give information to the readers about the influence of using An Easy Crossword toward students’ vocabulary mastery.


1.6 The Scope of The Research

The scope of the research is:

1.6.1 The Subject of the Research

The subject of the research was the students of the second semester of seventh class at SMP Budi Mulia Kedaton, Bandar Lampung.

1.6.2 The Research Object

The research object was the students’ vocabulary mastery.

1.6.3 The Time of the Research

The time of the research was conducted in the second semester of seventh class in February 2010.

1.6.4 The Place of the Research

The place of the research was conducted at SMP Budi Mulia Kedaton, Bandar Lampung.
