Apabila anda adalah seorang peserta didik, siswa atau pun siswi pasti sudah tidak asing dengan istilah Narrative Text. Dalam proses belajar mengajar untuk Bahasa Inggris di tingkat menengah, baik itu SMP atau pun SMA, bahkan di Perguruan Tinggi atau Universitas, pasti! tidak akan terlepas dari topik yang satu ini yaitu Narrative Text. Hal ini terbukti dalam Kurikulum dan Satuan Ajar Pendidikan dimana setiap peserta didik dituntut untuk bisa menceritakan sebuah kisah, dongeng atau pun cerita dalam bentuk tulisan. Oleh karena itu anda setidaknya mampu memahami contoh tentang Narrative Text dengan sangat baik agar ketika anda membaca cerita Bahasa Inggris, anda mampu mencerna dan memahami cerita tersebut.

Pemahaman Narrative Text
Narrative Text is an imaginative story to entertain people (sebuah cerita imajinasi untuk menghibur orang).
Saya akan menyimpulkan dari kaca mata dan sudut pandang saya mengenai Narrative Text.
Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa Narrative Text adalah sebuah teks yang berisi tentang kisah cerita dalam tulisan yang memiliki beberapa rangkaian peristiwa yang saling berhubungan.
Rangkaian cerita tersebut dapat anda pahami dalam penjelasan berikut ini mengenai Generic Structure.
Generic Structure of Narrative Text
1. Orientation
It is about the opening paragraph where the characters in the story are introduced.
Dalam penjelasan tentang Orientation ada beberapa garis bawah yang akan membantu anda memahami bagaimana cara membuat sebuah Orientation.
Hal yang pertama yang harus anda tulis dalam sebuah cerita Narrative Text adalah:
Anda perkenalkan terlebih dahulu mengenai tokoh dan karakter masing-masing, lalu berikutnya adalah setting atau tempat dan waktu terjadinya sebuah cerita tersebut.
Hidup ini merupakan sebuah panggung sandiwara dimana setiap kita memiliki peranan dalam topeng masing-masing.
Contoh berikut merupakan tahap pengenalan/ Orientation. Hal ini bertujuan agar pembaca dapat mengenal terlebih dahulu tentang tokoh-tokoh dalam kisah cerita tersebut dengan maksud agar pembaca dapat menggunakan daya imajinasi mereka masing-masing mengenai latar belakang tempat dan kejadian, karena setiap pembaca memiliki persepsi yang berbeda antara yang satu dan yang lain.
Berikut ini adalah penerapan tulisan dalam Narative Text
While admiring a rose blooming in the winter, Queen Eleanor of the Kingdom of Tabor pricked her finger on one of its thorns. Three drops of blood fell onto the snow-covered ground, and she wished for a daughter as white as the snow, with lips as red as the blood, hair as black as a raven’s wings and a heart as strong and defiant as the rose. Queen Eleanor gave birth to her daughter Snow White, but soon after felt ill and dies. After her death, Snow White’s father, King Magnus, and his army battle an invading Dark Army of demonic glass soldiers. Upon rescuing their prisoner Ravenna, he became enchanted with her beauty and married her.

2. Complication
Where the problems in the story developed.
Dalam tahap ini akan banyak sekali tulisan-tulisan tentang permasalahan yang muncul ke permukaan.
Karena hidup ini penuh warna, ada saatnya kita jatuh cinta dan pastinya akan ada pula saat untuk patah hati. Ini hanya masalah waktu saja. Tetapi memang seperti itu lah kehidupan yang kita jalani di dunia ini. Roda terus berputar dan detik pun terus bergerak maju. Pada saat ini mengalami duka yang dalam, tetapi ingat! Badai pasti berlalu dan duka pun akan menjadi suka yang tak kan pernah mampu dibayar oleh materi. Tetap semangat menjalani hidup ini. Karena hidup hanya sekali dan itu pun tak akan lama so Do Your Best Shot!
Saya akan meneruskan cerita di atas untuk bagian ke-2 ini yaitu Complication.

Ravenna, who was, in fact, a powerful sorceress and the Dark Army’s master, killed Magnus on their wedding night and usurped control of the kingdom. Snow White’s childhood friend William and his father Duke Hammond escaped the castle but were unable to rescue her, and she was captured by Ravenna’s brother Finn and locked away in the north tower of the castle for many years.
Tabor was ruined under Queen Ravenna’s rule as she periodically drained the youth from the kingdom’s young women in order to maintain a spell cast over her as a child by her mother which allowed her to keep her youthful beauty. When Snow White came of age, Queen Ravenna learned from her Magic Mirror, in the form of a golden, reflective liquid shaped like a man, that her stepdaughter Snow White was destined to destroy her unless Queen Ravenna consumed the young girl’s heart, which would make her truly immortal. Queen Ravenna ordered Finn to bring her Snow White’s heart, but she escaped into the Dark Forest, where Ravenna had no power. Queen Ravenna made a bargain with Eric the Huntsman, a widower, and drunkard, to capture Snow White, promising to bring his wife back to life in exchange. The Huntsman tracked down Snow White, but when Finn revealed that Queen Ravenna did not actually have the power to do what she promised, the Huntsman fought him and his men while Snow White run away. When the Huntsman caught up with her, she promised him gold if he would escort her to Duke Hammond’s castle. Meanwhile, Finn gathered another band of men to find her, and Duke Hammond and his son William learned that she was alive. William left the castle on his own to find her, joining Finn’s band as a bowman.
The Huntsman and Snow White left the Dark Forest, where she saved his life by charming a huge troll that attacked them. They made their way to a fishing village populated by women who had disfigured themselves to save their own lives, becoming useless to Queen Ravenna. While there, the Huntsman learned Snow White’s true identity and initially left her in the care of the women. He soon returned when he saw the village being burned down by Finn’s men. Snow White and the Huntsman evaded them and eventually met a band of eight dwarves named Beith, Muir, Quest, Coll, Duir, Gort, Nion, and Gus. The blind Muir perceived that Snow White was the daughter of the former king and the only person who could defeat Ravenna and end her reign.
As they traveled through a fairy sanctuary, the group is attacked by Finn and his men. The Huntsman battles Finn and killed him, and William revealed himself and helped defeat Finn’s men. However, Gus was killed when he sacrificed himself to take an arrow meant for Snow White. William joined the group which continued the journey to Hammond’s castle.

3. Resolution
Where the problems in the story are solved.
Dalam bagian ini, sedikit demi sedikit, permasalahan dari jalan cerita mengalami titik terang.
Ya.. tak ubahnya seperti Badai yang pasti akan berlalu. begitu pula dengan setiap masalah yang datang dan pasti seiring dengan jalan keluarnya masing-masing apabila kita tetap tenang dan selalu berusaha untuk mencari solusi yang terbaik diantara yang paling baik.
Saya akan melanjutkan kisah cerita di atas dengan menggunakan Resolution yang bertujuan untuk mencari jalan keluar dari semua masalah yang ada. Let’s go!

William kissed Snow White, whom he believed to be dead. She was taken to Hammond’s castle. As she lied in repose, the Huntsman professed his regret for not saving Snow White, who reminded him of his late wife, Sara, and he kissed her, breaking the spell. She awoken and walked into the courtyard, and raised the Duke’s army to mount a siege against Queen Ravenna.

4. Reorientation
The ending of the story
Bagian ini adalah akhir dari kisah cerita dimana pembaca dapat memahami pesan-pesan yang disampaikan melalui alur dan jalan cerita sebelumnya. Singkat kata, pada bagian ini, sebuah kisah cerita akan berakhir dengan berbagai macam “ending”. Maksudnya dengan adanya Reorientation, pembaca akan dengan mudah mengetahui dan memahami akhir cerita itu. Apakah akhir dari cerita itu sedih/ sad ending, bahagia/ happy ending, atau complicated/ membingungkan.
Saya akan melanjutkan kisah cerita diatas dengan menggunakan Reorientation sebagai bagian terakhir dalam Narrative Text. Karena tujuan dari Reorientation adalah memberikan sebuah kesimpulan tentang akhir dari sebuah kisah cerita.

The dwarves infiltrated the castle through the sewers and opened the gates, allowing the Duke’s army inside. Snow White confronted Queen Ravenna but was overpowered. Queen Ravenna was about to kill Snow White and consumed her heart, but Snow White used a move the Huntsman taught her and killed Queen Ravenna, and Duke Hammond’s army was victorious. With Queen Ravenna defeated and dead, the kingdom once again enjoyed peace and harmony as Snow White was crowned Queen and she and the Huntsman exchange looked before it cut to chants of “Long live the queen!”

Tidak jarang bila susunan Generic Structure of Narrative Text dapat memiliki susunan sebagai berikut:

Dalam pembuatan Narrative Text “Evaluation” dan “Reorientation” merupakan bagian pilihan yang bisa ditambahkan.
>> Evaluation berisi penilaian/evaluasi terhadap jalannya cerita atau konflik.
>>> Reorientation berisi kesimpulan akhir dari kisah cerita.
Grammar of Narrative Text
>> Dalam pembuatan Narrative Text, anda wajib menguasai Grammar yaitu “Past Tense” karena Past Tense adalah menu pokok yang akan anda tulis pada Narrative Text.
Catatan penting: Tidak semua kalimat yang ada dalam Narrative Text adalah Past Tense tetapi 80% Tense ini digunakan di dalam pembuatan Narrative Text.
Past Tense memiliki beberapa varian di dalamnya, yaitu meliputi:
- Simple Past Tense
- Past Continuous Tense
- Past Future Tense
- Past Perfect Tense
