Pengertian dan Penjelasan “Responding to Good News”

Responding = Merespon
Good = Baik
News = Berita/ Kabar

Responding to Good News adalah sebuah ekspresi untuk merespon sebuah berita atau kabar baik tentang sesuatu.

Misal:

Seorang anak mendapatkan nilai baik sebut saja dengan nilai “100”. Lalu anak tersebut merasa bangga pada dirinya sendiri karena dia telah berusaha belajar dengan keras untuk tes itu. “Sebuah proses tidak akan mengkhianati hasil”. Ketika sampai di rumah, anak tersebut memberikan kabar baik itu kepada orang tua nya. Sudah pasti itu merupakan kabar gembira, ya kan? Lalu orang tua tersebut merespon kabar itu dengan ungkapan “Amazing!, Well done, Good Job, Great, Awesome, etc”

Nah… Ungkapan ini lah “Amazing!” yang disebut dengan “Responding to Good News”

Penggunaan “Responding to Good News”

Di dalam penggunaannya, “Responding to Good News” dibagi dalam 2 situasi, yaitu:

1. Situasi formal dengan menggunakan beberapa varian ekspresi di bawah ini:

  • I am glad to hear that.
  • I’m happy with the news.
  • I can feel that you are happy.
  • That is a good news, congratulation to you.

2. Situasi informal dengan menggunakan beberapa varian ekspresi di bawah ini:

  • Really?
  • Wow!
  • Amazing!
  • Wonderful
  • That’s Great.

Beberapa Ekspresi Responding to Good News yang dapat kalian gunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Simak contoh berikut ini:

Congratulations!

Say “Congratulations” when something good happens to a person:

  1. Getting engaged or married
  2. Having a baby
  3. Having a wedding anniversary
  4. Being accepted into college, or graduating from college
  5. Getting a job or promotion
  6. Receiving an award or recognition (for example, “Employee of the Month”)
  7. Having some success – opening a new business, buying a house, etc.
  8. Don’t say “congratulations” on birthdays – say “Happy birthday!” instead!

You can also make a sentence using “on”:

  • Congratulations on your promotion!
  • Congratulations on getting into Harvard University!

Good Job!

Say “Good job!” when a person did something good:

  1. The person did good work on a project
  2. The person played well in a game or sang/danced well in a performance
  3. The person got the answer to a question right in school

You can also make sentences with “on”:

  • Good job on the sales report – it was accurate and well-organized.
  • Lucky You!

Differently from “good job,” we say “lucky you!” when something good happened to the person by luck, when they received something nice or a good opportunity.

  1. Winning the lottery
  2. Receiving free tickets to a show
  3. Going on three months of vacation

We don’t make sentences with “Lucky you!” – you say it alone. But you can make sentences with “You’re so lucky that…”

  • You’re so lucky that you get the day off from work tomorrow!
  • You’re so lucky that the teacher didn’t notice you were late to class!

That’s Great News!

Say “That’s great news!” (or one of the variations below) to respond to some information or a piece of news, for example:

  • “My son passed all his exams.”
  • “That’s great news!”
  • “Our company grew 20% this year.”
  • “That’s wonderful news!”
  • “A new cultural center is opening in the neighborhood.”
  • “That’s fantastic news!”

I’m So Happy For You!

Say “I’m so happy for you!” when there is (or will be) a very positive change in someone’s life, especially when their life will be very different as a result.

  1. Getting engaged or married
  2. Having a baby
  3. Getting into college
  4. Getting a job or promotion

You can also use it together with “Congratulations”:

  • “We’re going to have a baby!”
  • “Congratulations! I’m so happy for you! You’ll be great parents.”

Good For You!

Say this when a person has done (or is going to do) something to make their life better:

  • “I quit smoking last year.”
  • “Good for you!”
  • “I’m going to study abroad.”
  • “Good for you! I’m sure it’ll be a great cultural experience.”
  • “I signed up for a cooking class.”
  • “Good for you! I bet you’ll really enjoy it.”

Dialog tentang “Responding to Good News”

Lucy: Hi, Jane. I’ve been looking for you.
Hi, Jane. Aku sudah mencari kamu.

Jane: Hi. What’s up?
Hi. Ada apa?

Lucy: I have a good news for you. Your article with the title of “Indonesia’s Cultures” won the national competition.
Aku punya kabar baik untuk mu. Artikel kamu dengan judul “Budaya di Indonesia” memenangkan kompetisi nasional.

Jane: Really? That’s great. It’s what I want to hear. Where can I find the information about it?
Sungguh? Itu yang ingin aku dengar. Di mana aku dapat menemukan informasi tentang hal itu?

Lucy: I read the announcement in front of the teacher’s office.
Aku membaca pengumuman di depan kantor guru.

Jane: I want to see it. Thanks for the information.
Aku ingin melihatnya. Terima kasih untuk informasi nya.

Lucy: No problem. Congratulation, Jane!
Tidak masalah. Selamat, Jane!

Jane: Thank you.
Terima kasih.

Pada dialog di atas kata dan kalimat yang bercetak tebal merupakan sebuah ekspresi untuk merespon kabar baik dalam situasi informal.
